Collesalvetti... |
Collesalvetti and its surrounding areas have deep Etruscan and Roman origins. The area was originally named ‘Colle’ (Italian for Hills) but towards the end of the 12th was renamed Collesalvetti – Salvetti was the name of the area’s most important land owner. In 1200 the area was transformed into fortified stronghold of the Pisa dynasty until it fell into the hands of the Florentine domain. The Medici embarked on an economic expansion and Colle saw the birth of industry under the guidance of the Granducale – Medicea and Lorense monarchies. |

During
the Italian Renaissance period when great cultural
changes and important achievements were taking place
throughout Europe, Livorno was defined as the ideal
town. The city’s neighbourhoods are intersected
by canals, bridges, narrow streets, store houses
and surrounded by fortified town walls. The town’s
Venice district retains much of these characteristics
and is a very interesting excursion. |
